Hockney’s Artistic and Architectural Inspiration
David Hockney, celebrated for his vivid paintings of pools and portraits, also made significant contributions to theater set design, notably for the Metropolitan Opera. His home on the West Coast has long been a reflection of his colorful, theatrical aesthetic, inspired by works like Ravel’s Parade and Picasso’s set designs. Since purchasing the house three years ago, Hockney has gradually transformed it into a personal art piece, blending architecture, color, and his artistic themes.
His interest in turning his environment into a large, three-dimensional picture aligns with his artistic philosophy. The recent addition of a painted artwork continues this tradition, although specifics about the piece are still emerging.
“Hockney thinks of his sets as large pictures, but as three-dimensional, rather than two-dimensional pictures.”
